Hi and it's nice to be here. I am likely at a different stage in this journey than most of you. Our son on the spectrum is an adult now but I well remember his earlier years where we had no idea how things might go. And sometimes we wondered if we were up to the task. But, we all made it and he's an independent adult now.
I spent decades as a teacher, counselor, psychologist and consultant for a school district. I retired (for a lovely week!) then began job-sharing a position as autism consultant for a health region. I also teach educational psychology classes for a university. Plus we farm, so I'll soon be in the tractor for spring seeding.
Apart from my work and life experience with autism, that has been the focus of my academic life as well. I have a PhD specializing in ASDs, a Master's in Educational Leadership, a B.Ed in Exceptional Children and a B.A. in Psychology.
In my consulting parents and teachers would often tell me that they're hanging on by their nails and don't have time to read textbooks or wade through the internet to find information on autism. So I wrote a series of novels; each portrays a different child with autism (because they are all unique), their strengths and challenges and the strategies tried by the families and teachers who support them. The first book Autism Goes to School is free on all online book retailers like Amazon or at BookHip.com/zphdqc. Although I don't have control over the prices of the rest of the books, the ebook versions are under $3 and are sometimes free as well.
I'm happy to help or share anything that I've learned working with kids and families over the past thirty years.
